What Are Sunburns?
When we spend time in front of the sun, your body increases the production of melanin to protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is a pigment which gives color to your skin, hairs, and eyes. However, the skin will reach a point where the melanin can’t be produced quickly enough and this causes damage to the genetic material in your skin.
We have two types of damaging UV rays coming from the sun, i.e. UVA and UVB. UVB is responsible for sunburns and UVA for tanning, both types contribute to the risk of skin cancer. In the starting stage of the damage, the body produces more melanin to protect your skin from sunburn. But if you stay longer in front of the Sun, the UV rays start damaging the skin cells’ DNA and RNA. In response to this, the healthy cells start an inflammatory process to clear out the damaged cells before they become cancerous. Due to this, the blood flow in the skin increases, which makes the skin looks red and raw.
What Are The Symptoms?
The light-skinned people have low level of melanin that’s why they get sunburns within 10 to 15 minutes while the darker-skinned people are slightly more protected because of their naturally higher levels of melanin. The main symptoms are redness, blisters, tenderness, warmth, and pain, depending on the intensity of the burn.
When the healing process is under way, the patches of sunburned skin may even peel off. In extreme conditions of sunburns, it is also possible that you may need a visit to the hospital. More exposure to the sun also increases the risk of developing skin cancer.
